Life Story for Juana Dumenigo
Juana Maria (Mendez) Dumenigo, born May 25, 1936; passed away on February 8, 2018. Juana, who was also lovingly known as "Nena" to her many friends and family, was born in Santa Clara, Cuba. In 1966, she married Argelio Dumenigo, who predeceased her. She had her first child, Juana Maria (Jenny), soon after. In 1970 she left Cuba with her husband, daughter and mother-in-law via the Freedom Flights, landing in Miami’s “Cuban Ellis Island,” before settling in Newark, NJ and giving birth to two more children, Rose Mary and Argelio. Her love and care for children extended beyond her own, with dozens of children passing through her home-based daycare over four decades.
“The love she gave to others had no end. It was always a bountiful basket. I was blessed to have her as my mom, but honored to share her with so many,” said her daughter Rose Mary. “I am a good teacher because of the example and legacy she left me. Love all children like they are your own.”
She is survived by her three children; two grandsons, Gabriel and Leo; her sister, Elia Ynsua, as well as siblings Hector and Rosa in Cuba, and several nieces and nephews.
A celebration of her life will be held on Sunday, February 11, at Alvarez Funeral Home, 240 Mt.Prospect Ave. Newark, NJ; from 6pm to 9pm. The funeral will be on Monday, February, 12, at the funeral home from 9am to 10am, followed by a burial at Holy Cross Cemetery, 340 Ridge Rd, North Arlington, NJ 07031.
